A remarkable archive of our local area
The Tweedie Collection
John Tweedie the local historian left a remarkable archive of photos, maps, notes etc., collected as he chatted with local residents, researched in the national collections and worked in Kinleith Mill. This archive was the source material for his evening classes and his three books: Our District; Currie in Old Picture Postcards and A Water of Leith Walk. All was stored in the Palmer Road family home. But his family recognized it as a wonderful community resource and, on his death and that of his wife Molly, they negotiated a permanent home for it at the Heriot-Watt under the care of Helen Taylor, University Archivist. Since then, Currie and District Local History Society has worked hard to make much of it available digitally. This visit will allow us to view records relating to the story of the Riccarton estate, and John Tweedie’s role in preserving and promoting the history of the estates and the surrounding areas. Helen will lay out a selection from the archive for us to examine and will explain how we can access it in person and online. There will be twenty places. To book please phone Liz Beevers 0131 453 4115.
