“The Day of Victory:
The War Poets and the Armistice of 1918”
Dr Guy Cuthbertson
Guy Cuthbertson will discuss what has often been seen as one
of the most important days in history, 11 November 1918,
the day of the Armistice at the end of the First World War.
In Britain, we associate 11 November with silence, formality and
remembrance now, but 11 November 1918 was a day of joy and
relief, and chaos and wildness.
The talk will follow the day from midnight to midnight, looking at
how the news was disseminated and celebrated in Britain
The talk will look at how crowds in the streets responded to the
news, but it will also focus on how poets responded, including
Robert Graves and Siegfried Sassoon, who were both rather
horrified by the celebrations.
Their friend Wilfred Owen did not live to experience the
celebrations though, having died a week earlier - 11 November
was the day when the news arrived at his parents’ home in
Guy Cuthbertson is Head of the School of Humanities at
Liverpool Hope University, and the author of Wilfred Owen and
Peace at Last: A Portrait of Armistice Day, 11 November 1918.
As an expert on the First World War, he has made a number of
appearances on television and radio, including BBC One’s
Remembrance Sunday programme at the Cenotaph last year,
and he has written for a number of magazines and journals.
He is a General Editor of Edward Thomas’s prose for Oxford
University Press. In 2018 he was the British Academy’s
Chatterton Lecturer on Poetry.
