A short historical walk to Woodhall House
TInspired by Sir John’s account books we walked Sir John’s estate and visited the magnificently refurbished Woodhall House. Eighteen of us braved the icy conditions to consider what our spending says about us: very apposite on the day after Black Friday.  Sir John’s spoke of a genial, generous family man who rescued an ailing estate, looked after his tenants both large and small, married judiciously but happily four times and spent a small fortune on locks and keys.  How would we compare? We studied his estate stretching from Torphin to Bonaly, noted his appropriation of common land, his planting of beech and oaks and his encouragement of the enterprising tenant William Denham. We were welcomed in to Woodhall house by the new proprietor to admire the magnificent plaster ceiling and appreciate the wine cellar where Sir John kept his chopins and mutchkins of wine and the kitchen and cool room where he hung his “fat ox” for the winter meat.
