Liz Beevers will lead a two- mile walk from Juniper Green to Currie, communities founded on corn, paper and tobacco. We shall discover the sites and stories of some of our local mills and honour our local historian/storyteller, the late John Tweedie (1906-1984). John worked in Kinleith Mill, then spent the rest of his life researching and sharing our local history in books, night classes and the Currie and District Local History Society of which he was a founder member in 1970. Anyone interested in our local history starts with his three well-kent books: Our District; A Water of Leith Walk and Currie in Old Picture Postcards: all available to borrow from Currie Library. We will use the walkway from which we will note what remains of the mills, discuss their growth and decline and their multiple influences on our communities. While also telling John’s story we shall visit the school, the kirk and his birthplace. We hope that members of John’s family will join us on this walk which will involve some steps up and down and will finish at Currie Library. There will be twenty places.
